Aurora Chasing
To see the Aurora has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember ... it's part of the whole 'see the natural wonders of the world' dream. After watching Joanna Lumley's In The Land of the Nothern Lights programme in 2008, hubby and I booked a trip to Kiruna in Arctic Sweden and spent several nights on our backs in -20 degrees on a frozen lake staring at the sky, warming ourselves with vodka. We caught a glimse of a green stripe while out on skidoos one evening, but that was it for that trip.
In February this year (2014) we took the kids to the Lyngen Alps, 70 degrees north in Arctic Norway. We had a fantastic week, and were rewarded with a full on Aurora display on our last night as we drove back to the airport. The sky came alive as the Aurora danced in waves and curtains, changing shape and direction. It was the most incredible sight and one I want to see again and again.
Ironically, we missed the rare, multi-coloured display that lit up the skies of Norfolk a week after our trip, but Aurora chasing is something I know I will always want to do.
